Surname rankings in Italy
This section collects the rankings of the surnames found in Italy, built from the same data used to generate the maps: more than 27 million entries from the telephone directories of the 1990s.
The rankings look at surnames from two different angles. The ranking of 1000 surnames orders them by number of families: at the top is Rossi, with 60,487 families, followed by Russo and Ferrari. The ranking of the 1000 most widespread surnames orders them instead by the number of municipalities where they appear, rewarding surnames found almost everywhere over those that are numerous but concentrated in a few areas: Esposito, for example, is fourth by families but only tenth by municipalities.
The two rankings of the longest surnames gather the curiosities: three-part compound surnames, surnames fused into a single word, Tyrolean surnames and surnames that came to Italy with immigration.
From every ranking you can click on a surname to see its distribution map.
